What “Giving Value” truly means and six ways to execute it in your content strategy

“Just give value..”

“Just give value” used to be a common phrase used in the online space and still very much is today, but for some reason, most mentors don’t teach you how.

Giving value can be so much more than teaching! (that’s right service-based providers)

As human beings, we are invaluable by nature, and sometimes I believe the best forms of value aren’t teaching at all. They are the moments we share, the messy parts of humanness that aren’t shared often enough.

Let’s discuss value vs. viral

Do you want to know what is so wild? Fame used to be a negative side-effect of being great at something, and now fame seems just to be… end goal.

Let me tell you this. Value beats viral every time.

Sure, exposure is a crucial component of a marketing strategy, but you don’t solve every problem… so why would you want every type of person following you?

This waters down your audience with people who are not qualified leads.

Here are a few examples:

Network Marketers: You are a Network Marketing leader and have 100k followers of individuals that are in your current company. They can’t buy from you, and they definitely can’t join your team. Virality didn't equate to dollars.

Service Providers: You are a business coach who helps entrepreneurs scale. You have 100k followers, but none of them have businesses. Virality didn't equate to dollars.

Product-based Providers: You bake healthy dog treats. You have 100k followers, but none of them have dogs. Once again, Virality didn't equate to dollars.

Without further ado, here are six ways you can truly give value via content:

  1. Story-tell

Storytelling is 100% my most recommended form of content. While telling stories, you become relatable, give lessons, show vulnerability, demonstrate authority, and let people get to know you and your product/service better.

We wrote a blog on seven types of brand stories, and you should totally check it out after this!

2. Educate

Even though this is the most utilized form of giving value, it’s still SO necessary!

This type of content can look like: how-to’s, tutorials, lessons, what not to do, industry mistakes, etc.

Educational content will demonstrate your expertise, show your authority, and help you become credible in the industry you’re in.

3. Entertain

Entertaining your audience is important to keep their attention. After all, people come to social platforms out of entertainment.

This type of content can look like: humor, dancing, transitions, etc.

Entertaining content will help you get your message across in a way that is remembered and well-received.

4. Inspire

Inspirational content will inspire your audience to take immediate action with you. It should give them that nudge to get up and get going.

This type of content can look like: telling transformation stories, telling vision stories, sharing how you have helped customers and clients in the past, etc.

Inspiring your audience will make your content memorable and demonstrate your leadership.

5. Collaborate & connect

When you connect people with others who could be mutually beneficial, you’ll be perceived as someone who values community and takes care of their own community members.

This type of content can look like: join lives, guest coaching, instagram story take-overs, or sharing their content and giving them a moment of spotlight on your stories.

When you’re known as someone who values people over their own profit, you will gain trust and likability.

6. Getting vulnerable

Being vulnerable can be challenging, especially when many entrepreneurs on social platforms are doing the opposite. They are amping up the image of their life, instead of telling the messy-full story.

But guess what, them trying to be perfect on social is so unrelatable and it serves their ego more than their clients, customers, or business.

This type of content can look like: sharing a hard lesson, talking about a difficult decision you had to make, telling an embarrassing story that will help someone else.

Sometimes creating valuable content will feel uncomfortable, because it’s about them on the other side and not about us.
